چکیده

Temperature is expected to modify the effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on photosynthesis by affecting the rate of repair. We studied the effect of short-term (1 h) and long-term (days) acclimation to temperature on UVR photoinhibition in the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana Hasle et Heimdal. Photosynthesis was measured during 1 h exposures to varying irradiances of PAR and UVR + PAR at 15, 20, and 25 C, the latter corresponding to the upper temperature limit for optimal growth in T. pseudonana. The exposures allowed the estimation of photosynthesis–irradiance (P–E) curves and biological weighting functions (BWFs) for photoinhibition. For the growth conditions used, temperature did not affect photosynthesis under PAR. However, photoinhibition by UVR was highly affected by temperature. For cultures preacclimated to 20 C, the extent of UVR photoinhibition increased with decreasing temperature, from 63% inhibition of PAR-only photosynthesis at 25 C to 71% at 20 C and 85% at 15 C. These effects were slightly modified after several days of acclimation: UVR photoinhibition increased from 63% to 75% at 25 C and decreased from 85% to 80% at 15 C. Time courses of photochemical efficiency (UPSII) under UVR + PAR were also fitted to a model of UVR photoinhibition, allowing the estimation of the rates of damage (k) and repair (r). The r ⁄ k values obtained for each temperature treatment verified the responses observed with the BWF (R = 0.94). The results demonstrated the relevance of temperature in determining primary productivity under UVR exposures. However, the results suggested that temperature and UVR interact mainly over short (hours) rather than long (days) timescales.

Acclimation to elevated carbon dioxide and ultraviolet radiation in the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana: Effects on growth, photosynthesis, and spectral sensitivity of photoinhibition

We studied the effects of elevated CO2 concentrations (0.03% vs. 0.1%) on light absorption, membrane permeability, growth, and carbon fixation under photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposures in the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana. Susceptibility of photosynthesis to UVR was estimated using biological weighting functions (BWFs) for the inhibition of phot...

Fulfilling iron requirements of a coastal diatom under different temperatures and irradiances

The strategies used by a coastal diatom, Thalassiosira pseudonana, for potentially different iron (Fe) requirements under different temperatures and irradiances were examined on the basis of three parameters: Fe uptake rate, cellspecific growth rate, and Fe efflux rate constant. These three variables determined the cellular Fe concentration, and they were all quantified under different temperat...

UV effects on photosynthesis, growth and acclimation of an estuarine diatom and cryptomonad

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a significant stressor in aquatic environments and can inhibit primary productivity of phytoplankton. The effects of UV depend on many factors, including phytoplankton community composition and acclimation status. Using spectrally resolved biological weighting functions (BWFs), we determined sensitivity of photosynthesis and acclimation to UV in a common estuarine ...

Effects of temperature on growth rate, cell composition and nitrogen metabolism in the marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana (Bacillariophyceae)

Although temperature effects on phytoplankton growth and photosynthesis can be clearly demonstrated in the laboratory, their relevance in the field is much harder to establish. Recently, however, it has been recognized that temperature has a significant influence on nitrogen uptake. In particular, temperate marine diatom species may be limited by their ability to acquire nitrate at temperatures...

The Response of Thalassiosira pseudonana to Long-Term Exposure to Increased CO2 and Decreased pH

The effect of ocean acidification conditions has been investigated in cultures of the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana CCMP1335. Expected end-of-the-century pCO(2) (aq) concentrations of 760 µatm (equivalent to pH 7.8) were compared with present-day condition (380 µatm CO(2), pH 8.1). Batch culture pH changed rapidly because of CO(2) (aq) assimilation and pH targets of 7.8 and 8.1 could not be s...
